Apple CarPlay vs Android Radio: Which Upgrade Is Right for Your Car?

If you want your phone's maps, music and WhatsApp on a big screen in the car, you'll quickly run into two options: a CarPlay head unit or an Android radio. They can look identical in the dash, but they work differently. This guide explains the difference in plain terms so you can choose the right one for how you drive.

The short answer

A CarPlay head unit is mainly a screen for your phone. When your phone is connected you get Apple CarPlay (or Android Auto), and when it isn't, the radio does very little beyond FM and Bluetooth.

An Android radio is a computer in your dash. It runs its own apps and navigation, and a good one also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto built in. So you don't have to choose: an Android radio with wireless CarPlay gives you both.

*Our 360° camera kit needs the radio to be ordered with the 360° chip, as it can't be added later. If your car already has factory 360° cameras, you don't need the chip.

When a CarPlay-only unit makes sense

If everyone who drives the car has an iPhone, only ever uses CarPlay and doesn't want cameras or extra features, a simple CarPlay unit can do the job. The trade-off is that the radio is only as useful as the phone plugged into it.

When an Android radio is the better choice

  • Shared cars: different drivers, iPhone and Android, all connect easily.
  • Bakkies and 4x4s: built-in navigation keeps working when your phone is busy, and front, reverse or 360° cameras help on trails and with trailers.
  • Families: passengers can play music or videos (while parked) without taking over the driver's phone.
  • Sound upgrades: the DUDU5 and DUDU7 have DSP audio tuning, which matters if you're adding amplifiers or speakers.

What does it cost?

DUDUAUTO model-specific kits start at R5,899.99 for the DUDU3, R7,699.99 for the DUDU5 and R10,999.99 for the DUDU7, and include the frame and harness for your car. Universal options start from R4,500. All come with a 3-year warranty. See our Android car radio buying guide for what to look for, or compare DUDU3, DUDU5 and DUDU7.

Does it work with my older car?

Usually, yes. Most cars from the last 15 to 20 years can take an Android radio with a vehicle-specific kit. Read how to add wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to an older car, or find your vehicle.
